Millennials' Most Popular App Will Surprise You

Millennials' Most Popular App Will Surprise You

Pop quiz: Which app do you think keeps millennials glued to their phones?

Your first guess, as was mine, is probably Snapchat, judging by the amount of time people spend putting their faces through those funny (and sometimes terrifying) filters.

But it turns out, Amazon is the app 18-to-34 year olds say is essential to their lives, according to the 2017 U.S. Mobile App Report from comScore. Snapchat, meanwhile, didn't even crack the top 10.

According to the report, here are the apps millennials say they "can't go without":

1. Amazon, 35%
2. Gmail, 30%
3. Facebook, 29%
4. Facebook Messenger, 18%
5. YouTube, 16%
6. Google Maps: 14%
7. Google Search: 11%
8. Apple App Store: 11%
9. WhatsApp: 11%
10: Instagram: 11%

Perhaps less surprising was the amount of time that millennials actually spent on their phones; 18-to-24 year olds say they spend 66% of their "digital media time" on their smartphone, compared with just 23% on their desktops; 25-to-34 year olds spend 54% and 31%, respectively, on those platforms. A pretty impressive 19% of millennials also said they'd purchased 12 or more apps in the past year, compared with just 3% of Gen Xers and 1% of baby boomers.

So basically, millennials aren't as social-obsessed as we think they are; they're partial to practical apps like the rest of us (i.e., the stuff that helps you get stuff done).

Speaking of getting stuff done, here are some apps you might not be as familiar with that could help you cross some important money tasks off your to-do list. Here are a few that can help you navigate back to school shopping season; a couple more that can help you get some cash for your clutter; and a pair to help you cut back on unwanted subscriptions.
