How Coffee Can Give Your Relationship a Boost

How Coffee Can Give Your Relationship a Boost

Drink up, readers! You'll like this news: Research suggests that drinking coffee could give your love life a boost — and no, this doesn't have anything to do with that cute barista you visit every morning.

These findings are actually based on two related studies, one of which focuses on sleep and relationships, the other on coffee. The overarching takeaway? Getting enough zzz's can help improve relationship happiness — but if your hectic schedule doesn't allow for that, coffee can provide a similar effect.

First, the sleep part: Research published in the Journal of Family Psychology surveyed 68 newlywed heterosexual couples on how satisfied they were in their marriages. Each person was asked every day for a week about their sleep, satisfaction with specific events in their relationship and their overall relationship satisfaction.

Researchers found that couples who were more rested were happier in their relationships. And for husbands, those who slept best were less likely to negatively judge their overall relationship satisfaction based on a few bad moments throughout the study. Psychology Today notes that the connection here is that better sleep gives us more "self-regulatory strength" to differentiate our overall happiness from the daily ups and downs. "We need the mental strength to override negative feelings about a specific event to make a positive judgment about a relationship," the author writes.

That's all well and good, but what about those of us who can't always get our full eight hours a night? That's where our beloved daily coffee fix comes in. A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology shows caffeine has been shown to replenish self-regulatory strength (which encourages better judgment) in the face of sleep deprivation.

Basically, you're in a better place to judge your relationship satisfaction after a full night's sleep. But let's be honest: Not all of us can be that well rested every day, and if crankiness from sleep deprivation is resulting in couples' tiffs, it might be worth reaching for a steaming mug of joe before you talk about anything serious with your sweetheart.

So go ahead and spend a few bucks on your daily coffee run — it could be *just* the thing to boost your energy and your relationship.
