Millennials Are Flocking to These 3 Cities (They’re Not Where You Think)

Salt Lake City. Home to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; host of the 2002 Winter Olympics; and Millennial hot spot?

Turns out the Utah capital tops the list of places people in their 20s and 30s are searching for homes, according to new findings from Other under-the-radar cities, like Miami in second and Orlando closely following, round out the top three.

Some usual suspects like Seattle and San Francisco also appear high in the "Top Cities for Millennials" rankings, thanks to a tech boom that just won't quit. But others, like Buffalo and Albany, are more surprising.

So why is the generation characterized by boomerang kids looking to settle into these areas? Job opportunities, low costs of living and other Millennials are main draws, the report says.

"High job growth in markets such as Orlando, Seattle, and Miami, and the power of affordability in places like Albany and Buffalo are making these markets magnets for Millennials,” said Javier Vivas, manager of economic research for, in a press release. "But what really stands out is that all these markets already have large numbers of Millennials, which translates into strong populations of Millennial home buyers."

That's especially true in number-one Salt Lake, where Millennials comprise 15.8% of the city's population. Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco hover around the 15% mark. Meanwhile, the national average of American 25- to 34-year-olds as a whole is 13%.

The list was compiled by taking the 60 largest U.S. housing markets and seeing which locales racked up the most page views among Millennials compared to the national average.
