My Fabulous, Money-Making Side Gig: ‘I Sell My Crafts on Etsy’

Linda FacciIn our new series, “My Fabulous, Money-Making Side Gig,” we get the skinny on enterprising folks who are getting ahead on their financial goals by burning the midnight oil.

The goal? Go behind the scenes to learn exactly how they’re doing it—so you can see if the side job could be a fit for you too.

Today’s side gig spotlight: One woman who uses her artistic background to craft custom needle-felted animals to sell in her Etsy shop.

Linda Facci has always been the creative type. As a kid she spent hours drawing, sewing, making jewelry, crafting papier-mâché bowls and boxes—so much so that Facci’s kindergarten teacher told her mom that the artistically imaginative girl had “golden fingers.”

Her love and pursuit of art led to an impressive graphic design career in publishing spanning 18 years. To date, Facci has held high-level art direction and design positions at magazines such as InStyle, People and Rachael Ray—and she’s currently the creative director of famous New York City sweet shop Magnolia Bakery.

But despite her creative curiosity and forays into all things art, it wasn’t until an event at Anthropologie in 2012 that she tried her hand at needle-felting—a practice that uses barbed needles to interlock wool fibers, forming a condensed fabric that can be shaped into different figures. Soon after, she took her felting interest to the next level and began to showcase pieces on her Facci Designs Etsy page. Almost three years in, Facci has already brought in enough extra income to help support another one of her artistic endeavors—renovating and furnishing the stone house she and her husband recently bought in upstate New York.

Here’s how she got hooked.
