Why Being Good About Saving Can Save Your Health

Why Being Good About Saving Can Save Your Health

Sure, ramping up your retirement contributions will help your financial health.

But could it also benefit your physical health?

According to new research from the Aegon Retirement Readiness Survey 2015, people who sock away regularly are actually significantly more likely than non-savers to be in healthy shape.

Further, 77% of Americans who are currently in excellent health say they expect to live comfortably in retirement—compared to a mere 49% of those who consider themselves to be in poor health.

One possible explanation? Stress. After all, money is now the top cause of stress in the U.S. So savers who feel more financially secure might be sidestepping some of the negative health effects of serious stress.

At the same time, previous research has shown that many of the same traits that help with physical fitness—like discipline and willpower—can also be favorable to financial fitness.

Interestingly, the study noted that this correlation between retirement savings and health actually doesn't have much to do with having a high income. In fact, the average income of habitual savers is just $41,000 globally, and $73,000 in the U.S.

In other words, enjoying the health benefits of feeling more financially prepared for retirement doesn't have to mean maxing out your 401(k) every year. Instead, these healthy savers were simply those who had made building up their nest eggs a regular habit—and stuck with it.
