Take the July Financial Freedom Challenge (The Prize Is $250!)

As we gear up for backyard barbecues, fireworks and celebrating our nation this Fourth of July weekend, we started thinking about another declaration of independence: our finances.

We’ve covered the topic before, whether it was mind-blowing money milestones in women’s financial independence, or finding out what that independence means to you. Now we want you to take it one step further.

This month’s challenge: What's the best thing you've ever done to become more financially independent?

We have a few answers of our own here at LearnVest:

• I became financially independent when I built up my own emergency fund of six months of expenses. Before I reached that point, if I'd ever run into a large surprise expense—like having to go to the hospital or replace my laptop—I would have gone to my parents for help. Now I know I could take care of myself in an emergency without burdening them.

• I decided to get a credit card after my first year of college to start building credit. It has a small limit and I use it sparingly, but getting a credit card has put into perspective for me what it means to be financially smart. I am now much more cognizant of how much I am spending!

Now, in the comments below, share the best step you have taken toward financial independence. Once you post, you’ll be entered to win $250.

Be sure to use your email address when you comment—it won’t be visible to other users—so we can notify you should you win. Enjoy the fireworks, and good luck!
