A Win for Parents at Yahoo

Since accepting the position as Yahoo CEO, Marissa Mayer has not stopped making waves. We loved her as a strong, powerful, female CEO of a big, important company ... then some were irked when she took a two-week maternity leave after giving birth to her first child.

In February, some were annoyed when she banned employees from working from home in an all-staff memo touting that, "speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home." (Keep in mind: In America, millions of people telecommute for work every single day.)

Now, because of a new family leave policy sanctioned by Mayer, she may be gaining some of her former fans back. The policy allows for moms at Yahoo to take 16 weeks of paid leave with benefits, while dads can take up to eight. Under the old rules, moms were only given eight weeks of paid maternity leave for regular childbirth.

While these policies are set for parents having children via childbirth, the policy also gives parents eight weeks off for new children brought into the family through adoption, foster child placement or surrogacy.

If extended maternity leave isn't enough, the policy also gives new parents $500 for spending on cleaning, groceries or sitters.

"It's a smart move," Rachel Sklar, founder of The Li.st, an organization dedicated to elevating the status of women in media and technology, told NBC Bay Area. "It suggests a long-term strategy. This is a great precedent."
