It’s not often that we here at Broke Girl’s Guide look to A-listers for advice on how to live well on a budget. But then again, Molly Sims is not your typical former swimsuit model.
The soon-to-be mom segued her prowess on the catwalk into an enviable acting career, all the while working with charities such as Operation Smile. And most recently, she's been acting as host for Lifetime’s new show Project Accessory.
With all of these astounding achievements, you’d think her head would have taken up permanent address in the clouds (those above Beverly Hills, no less), but Molly’s managed to stay true to her Kentucky roots.
She knows more than a thing or two about financial savvy, and her website, MollySims.com, regularly features beauty bargains and affordable fashion finds. (The one belt that will solve our wardrobe issues? Prenatal vitamins for beautiful hair? We're intrigued.) Now, she’s offered to share her hard-earned expertise on budget styling along with updates on her latest projects--mommyhood chief among them!
When you were still up and coming, were there any shortcuts you used for looking good on the cheap?
Molly Sims: "Always look for a bargain" and "never pay full price" were and still are my shopping mantras. Go through fashion magazines, find trends that you are drawn to and make it your mission to find those items on sale!
What are the basic items every woman should have in her wardrobe?
A black blazer, flattering fitted jeans, black trousers ... and not to sound cliché, but the LBD as well. It shouldn't be too little or scream "sex siren," but you should have a great black dress you can add accessories to and wear to a wedding, or throw a blazer or cardigan over and attend almost any event.
Are there certain items you feel are worth the splurge, and others that you feel are just as good at a lower price point?
Definitely! I think it is important to invest in staple wardrobe items that you know will be in your closet for years. For budget brands with great style, I love H&M, Topshop and Zara. Plus, who doesn't love a good sale at J.Crew?!
Keeping your look fresh can be expensive! What’s an easy, cost-effective way to make an outfit feel new?
Accessories! Adding or changing accessories can totally alter the look of an outfit. Simply adding a scarf can transform something as basic as jeans and a t-shirt by adding a pop of color, texture and layer to your look.
Has your new show Project Accessory inspired you to get DIY with your own jewelry?
Project Accessory is a spin-off of Project Runway. The difference is that on our show the designers are making accessories (belts, purses, shoes, jewelry), which on the surface sounds easy, but it is insanely hard! I was definitely inspired by the show to do more DIY. While we were filming, I took some of my jewelry and wire-wrapped them to barrettes so I could wear them in my hair.
What trend are you loving right now?
I think colored jeans are perfect for adding a pop of color to your wardrobe.
Did your mother or grandmother pass on any style secrets that you still live by?
My Gran and Momma always taught me that less is more. I think the Coco Chanel quote says its best: “Before leaving the house, a lady should stop, look in the mirror and remove one piece of jewelry.”
And on a more personal note, congratulations on your soon-to-be-born first child! How does it feel to be expecting your first baby, and what are you doing to prepare?
I am so very excited to have our first baby, but it's crazy how tired I can get. Once the sun goes down, I'm ready for bed! As far as preparations go, it's no joke when you read about expectant mothers nesting before Baby comes. I feel like my middle name is "nesting." I have cleaned out every drawer, cabinet and closet in the house!
