Quiz: Do You Have Money Comparisonitis?

In the past, we’ve talked about money comparisonitis and its equally evil twin, mompetition. At LearnVest, we want you to live your richest life, which means splurging from time to time and living a full life, rather than an ascetic one.

That said, we want you to splurge on things because you want to, not because you’re being peer pressured by the people around you, or because others are making you feel guilty. It’s human nature to compare yourself to those around you, but it’s not good for us when we let those negative feelings run away from us.

It’s the flip side of the same coin when you are the perpetrator of the comparisonitis game. Whether you have trouble stopping yourself from bragging to others about your financial achievements or you can’t help the need to keep up with the Joneses, you might be using too much mental space looking at other people and their possessions or accomplishments.

Take our quiz to see if you’ve got the comparisonitis bug, and check out the quiz results for guidance on how to deal with it.

I actually tend to brag about how LITTLE I spent for something. Like I recently bought a house for less than a friend spent for her car. Now THAT is cool.

        I do that too!

As far as buying things because others around you have them, sometimes that’s a sign that there’s an entry fee to a certain place. For example, let’s say you take a factory job but don’t own the appropriate work boots. Everyone else working in that factory owns a certain kind of work boots. Wouldn’t that be a smart buy?

I apparently have mild comparisonitis because I finally got a smartphone last August in order to catch up with the rest of the planet. I use the thing all the time for phone, email, other internet/data stuff, as a camera… well worth it.
