LearnVest recognizes World AIDS Day today, along with cities around the world. Additionally, many of these communities will dim their lights as part of the Light for Rights campaign. The internationally recognized health day occurs annually on December 1 to raise awareness of AIDS and HIV prevention. Since its inception in 1989, World AIDS Day has promoted factual information on HIV and AIDS to communities the world over in the hopes of slowing, and eventually ending, the spread of the HIV virus. Each year, the campaign adopts a theme to focus its efforts and this year’s theme is “Stop AIDS. Keep The Promise – Universal Access and Human Rights.” Light for Rights has a similar mission: to spread awareness of global human rights as they pertain to AIDS and HIV prevention and treatment.
What Can I Do?
The World AIDS Campaign lists hundreds of events taking place today in recognition of World AIDS Day. Check out their calendar and see if there’s something going on near you. If not, you can also participate in Light for Rights, which also features local events. In addition, they give great tips on how to get involved on your own.
