From Ginger Beer to Shandy: Your Oktoberfest Guide to Beer Mixers

We are presently on the heels of Oktoberfest, which signifies that fall—and seasonal beers—are in bloom. Although we aren’t always diehard beer fans, Oktoberfest reminds us of our time in Munich, where we tried one of the best beer drinks ever, called radler. Strange though it may sound, radler is a beer cocktail, known as shandy in the UK. It mixes beer and lemonade, which tastes delicious and has a hidden perk: Mixing beer with nonalcoholic drinks makes the whole cocktail inexpensive.

What used to be a European phenomenon is now spreading to the United States. This season, update your Oktoberfest mindset with fashion-forward and frugal beer cocktails.

Sprite would probably taste much better! Cheers, Caroline, LearnVest’s Chief Content & Community Officer

      • I think part of it is that lots of Europeans say “lemonade” when they really mean carbonated citrusy drinks like Sprite…

I love beer and I am a die hard beer drinker. One suggestion I can make for a cheap, fun date or activity is to go to a brewery. There are many local breweries in addition to more popular ones like Coors in Colorado and Sam Adams in Boston. Just a suggestion for us gals who aren’t into wine or liquor.

Jackie, great call! I once saw a show about one brewery that lets guest go swimming in beer. Whee! Cheers, Caroline, LearnVest’s Chief Content & Community Officer

Great article! I wrote the menu for the craft beer distributor for most of Manhattan and Brooklyn, so friends are always asking me for my recommendations when the weather gets a bit too cold for a frosty brew. Just RT’d and FB’d this gem :)

What a shame. The slideshow didn’t work for me…I know people have said this before, but I wish learnvest would cut it out with the “slideshows” because in actuality most people would prefer a LIST with photos rather than a slideshow, where one is expected to continuously click “next.”
