New York State is now officially the most expensive place in the country to be a smoker, as legislation was approved last night for a $1.60 per pack tax increase on cigarettes. This raises the state tax to a whopping $4.35 per pack, or $6.85 for those in New York City (which also has a tax of its own).
Aside from collecting revenue (it’s estimated around a cool $290 million per year), the tax is sure to curb plenty of young new smokers and leave many current smokers forced to quit.
