Need used car! Debt free, Good Credit, Bad loan http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/312/need-used-car-debt-free-good-credit-bad-loan Mon, 18 Mar 2013 16:48:21 -0400 holly golighty 312@/discussions/discussions The thing is I ONLY have credit through 3 credit card accounts, and the highest limit I have is $750 on a card. They would not let me raise my limit, even though I've had the card for 3+ years now (which is also how long I've had credit).
I tried applying for a car loan through a local credit union, but only got $8k with a cosigner. I am unable to have a cosigner, and my current vehicle is not in the best shape (over $1,000 in repairs needed)
What's the next move I should take???

I came out of school a few years ago with only about $45k in student loan debt, which I've since paid down to close to $32k.

I've decided for personal reasons that I want to go back to become a foreign language teacher. The area I went to school for and subsequently am working in now just is not fulfilling work, nor is it making me happy. I kind-of got steamrolled through college without really thinking about what I WANTED, rather, just about what would be the most job security.

So, luckily, I found a school that has a program that is solely a graduate program created for people like me, who want to go back and teach in a subject that was not what they have their bachelors degree in. I know everyone complains about student loan debt, and to each his own, but for me, I'd rather take on the additional 30-50k for graduate school and be happy then spend the 30-50k to go back to graduate school for the field I'm in.

I'll be working the job Im at currently throughout the whole process up until the time I have to student teach, at which point I will be trying to look for programs with debt forgiveness (ie - teach america, something like that), to help with the costs - but do any of you have any advice on how I can minimize any additional student loan debt (aside from paying as I go), or know of any places that have a comprehensive list of where scholarships are offered?]]>

I have a 0 balance on my credit card and was thinking of having my 3 student loans to be paid each month on my credit card and then I would just have to make one payment to my credit card (instead of the hassle of having my student loans hit my debit card multiple times a month).

Does anyone do this- pros/cons?]]>

I would like to open an additional savings or (banking) account to put in just $10 a month for birthday girfts and christmas next year. Do you have an recommadations for a no balance fee account. I'm somewhat open to an additional banking so that I can just buy the gifts directly from that account?

Any advice out there?]]>
Income Based Student Loan Repayment / Loan forgiveness http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/266/income-based-student-loan-repayment-loan-forgiveness Mon, 05 Nov 2012 09:32:02 -0500 Bsmurphy 266@/discussions/discussions
I'd really like to go back to school, but I don't want to go any further into debt to do it. I've been thinking about it, and I'm thinking that since income based repayment caps my payments depending on my income, that it doesn't really matter how much more I take out in loans, that I'll only have to pay back the percentage for 120 payments.

Sooo..... if I go back to school and take out $6,000 more in Stafford loans, then start back on IBR when I graduate, I won't have to pay back any more than I would have originally.

Does that make sense to anyone else?? ]]>
credit cards & priority goals http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/308/credit-cards-priority-goals Tue, 05 Mar 2013 10:21:43 -0500 LBE 308@/discussions/discussions I just bought a new computer for $1000 on my visa. Then I immediately paid off the visa. Rather than showing that I used $1000 of my budget for the month, my LV account showed $1000 used to pay off my priority goals and $1000 on purchases. How do I fix this?

Thanks!!!]]>

I am a single, healthy, self-employed female currently without health insurance of any kind. My CFP is wisely urging me to buy individual health insurance, and suggested that I look into opening a Health Savings Account (HSA).

I've found a few insurance plans that are HSA eligible. My concern right now is finding the right HSA account provider/servicer.

Does anyone have experience--positive or negative--with different HSA providers? There are so many fees to track, it's difficult to know which organization is "the right choice" for my account.

I'd really appreciate getting a sense of who is commonly used for these accounts, how they fare against other providers, and whether anyone has any recommendations.

Thanks!

I'm new to LearnVest and am starting to put together my budget for the month. One conundrum I'm running into is that my boyfriend and I (who live together) pick up the tab for certain things - groceries, bills, etc - and then split our totals at the end of the month when we pay our rent. I usually pay for groceries, the electric bill comes from his account, etc. We add up what we've each spent, and reimburse each other for half.

Does anyone have any tips for budgeting when you know you're going to be reimbursed at the end of the month? For instance, my personal budget for groceries may be $100 per month, but I'll be spending $200 for two people, so I'll appear to be over budget when checking into LearnVest.

Or maybe my boyfriend and I just need a new system! :)

Thanks for any advice!]]>
