My boss is driving me crazy!
  • What does your boss do that drives you up the wall? What do you do to stay sane/productive?
  • I'm a big list maker. Nothing is ever as overwhelming on paper as it feels in my head. Lists can get long, but it frees up brain space when I write it down.
  • My boss is a micro-manager and he breathes down my neck a lot. If there are no tasks coming in, he will comment on my phone cord needing to be unwound or my computer screen needing to be cleaned (argh!). I...breathe first...and then take on the task at hand, but I'm sure not to go out of my comfort zone while doing it, especially if he's still standing there. ie: I don't do the task hastily or get nervous, which seems to be his intention. I do not abandon my way of working to accommodate his way of working; I simply take on his task and 'own it' as if it were me who wanted to do it (well sure, I wouldn't mind a perfectly unwound phone cord!). I shift my focus and concentration away from him standing there and on to my execution of the task at hand. And I keep breathing!

  • Hey Katheryn, I love your coping strategies for your micromanager boss - they're really great and spot on! I love this: "I do not abandon my way of working to accommodate his way of working." Yet you still get done what he wants. I bet you're a great employee. Ask for that raise! ;)
  • Haha, thanks MariaLin! :-)
  • I've been lucky enough to have great bosses...until recently. My last job had me crying every day. I needed a job so bad and it took me 8 months to find one. I was thrilled and grateful. But the work environment was so stressful I developed an ulcer and I started looking for a job one month after I was hired. I stayed day after day because I have responsibilities to myself and my family. I was NOT giving up without having another job. 8 months later I found a job and had the satisfaction of quitting the job from hell! It was great.

Then I thought I had found the job of my dreams. Great pay, applying my knowledge, freedom to grow, more responsibility than I'd been previously trusted with....I've been there 2 months and I want to quit again. And I'm NOT a quitter.

My current boss meets 8 out of the 9 signs!!! Pulling teeth to get feedback. I ask to be informed if there are problems, time goes by and I'm attacked weeks later. Every co-worker is favored over me. I never get any compliments except from my co-workers. I'm not appreciated, taken for granted, talked down to, and I'm STUCK. HELP!!!!
  • My boss is very inconsistent. She changes rules all the time. She will send me emails (which can get nasty at times) and then when I email back (as professional as i can) I don't even get a confirmation or any reply at all. She demands too much but cuts on the number of people to do the job...very unrealistic. Her favorite mantra is "NO IFS OR BUTS..."
