Do you feel under/over paid?
  • I'm a college student and in class today we were discussing the Occupation movement and one student asked if there was any reason a secretary should be paid the same as a CEO. Aside from the obvious "What secretary do you know is demanding to be paid the same as a CEO," I find it interesting the issue of income inequality in the United States (which has the highest income inequality of any industrialized nation) can be boiled down to such a topic. So I was wondering: Do you feel you get paid too little/too much? Just an honest answer; do you think the free market is paying you what you're worth, based on your education, your work effort, your importance? Why or why not? And do you feel like you can change it/do you even want to change it?
  • I know I am being underpaid as an executive assistant at my company compared to the average in my area (los angeles). I took a pay cut when I first started based off my first job but I had been unemployed for 9 months at the time so I was willing to take it. I've tried to negotiate for same raises over the years but still feel I am making about $10k less than I should be possible at another company.
  • Yes, but I know that I cannot ask for a raise because I am a state employee, and if you've seen the news in any state you're in, well then you know that I'm more likely to see a pay cut in the next 5 years than a pay raise .... despite the increased cost of living.
