Unemployment Payments
  • This is probably a specific question, and I'm sure I need to talk to a professional, but no one at the actual unemployment office has been able to help me answer this question:

Last summer I was laid off from my job. I filled for unemployment [in the state of GA] and recieved almost 2K in payments. Later my previous employer took me to appeals court, they won, and I had to pay all of that money back. I had also already signed up for, and elected for both state and federal taxes to be taken out of said checks, because I didn't want to have to worry about it come tax time.

Well, now I'm worrying about it because I just got my tax document from the GA DOL and it's basically stating "this is how much you were given" and "this is how much were taxes that were taken out" - but nothing on there says that I've already paid all that back. I have the receipts and formal letter saying my balance was paid from the DOL offices, but am I going to get slammed with this once I file? Am I going to have to pay taxes twice on this?

Has anyone been in a similar situation with this or have any advice?
