Under: Debt
Over 100,000.00 student loans
  • Hi! Does anyone know of any ways to lower your payments with sallie Mae? I am in such a bind ...my under grad psych degree cost me upwards of 170,000.00 . I'm paying about 800.00/month in just private loans, this doesnt include the federal ones i have too! Sallie Mae will not work with me! I make less then 35,000/year! I wish they would let me do ibr but they won't...has anyone had any luck??help I'm drowning in debt !
  • I was in the same boat as you with about $97,000 worth of student loan debt after graduating from undergrad. About half of that debt is with Sallie Mae. However, after countless hours and instances of begging (there might have been a minor break down or two) on the phone, I was offered the RATE REDUCTION PROGRAM.

This program drops the interest rate on my student loans down to 1%; therefore, allowing me to pay off more of the principal balance. The duration of the program is just one year. I'm happy to say that I just recently started my second year on the program. I'm not sure exactly what the requirements are for this program as my situation is a little different than most. I've been teaching ESL in South Korea. Due to the language barrier (in reference to official documents) and the ever-fluctuating exchange rate, they can not determine if in fact I am able to make the payments that they are asking of me (although I assure you that I cannot and would be able to produce documents substantiating this claim). With that being said, I was told by a representative that "we can not deny you this program" because of the aforementioned reasons.

I only hope that things will work out for you as they did for me. Best of luck to you!
