I got out of Big Banks years ago. The hidden fees and arbitary charges were too much to bare. I went with a local credit union, and I've been satisfied ever since. I would recommend a local credit union as a viable alternative to Mega Banks.
I"m currently exploring options for day-to-day banking. I currently bank with a large bank and I'm annoyed by the fees for basic services and the constant drive away from the branch to online banking. I manage most of my checking and savings virtually but sometimes you just want to ask someone a question face-to-face.
I switched to an online bank from Chase. When they made mistakes they were unapologetic and it took a lot to change them. With Ally I can transfer money from abroad without a fee and keep the account with no fee. Quite satisfied.
Never had a problem with US Bank either. I've decided to stay with them for now.
I love my bank now. I went with Schwab who offers mainly online banking but you can visit Schwab centers if they happen to be near you. No atm fees from any ATM. No foreign transaction fees when abroad. These were enough to make me make the switch.
