Under: Career
interview dilemma!
  • I started college as a business major, but switched to engineering after one year because I wanted to be more challenged and learn a valuable skill. My mentality was that I can do business with an engineering degree but not vice versa.

I have now been an electrical engineer for 3 years and I hate my career. I have applied for several marketing, PR, event planning, and various business-related jobs, and have only landed one interview last fall, where I got to the final round of interviews and was rejected. I believe that people see my engineering experience on my fancy photoshopped resume and immediately write me off.

I recently found my dream position: a marketing manager position for an engineering company, in the industry where I have 3 years of experience. The position actually REQUIRES an engineering degree! I was ecstatic when I received a call back from the company… only to find out they were interested in interviewing me for an engineering position.

Do I take the interview and try to show off my marketing experience and skills? Do I try to talk the HR woman into giving me a shot for the marketing manager position? Do I go for the engineering position anyway in hopes of transferring to the marketing department later? Help!

Follow-up question: should I consider going back to school for an MBA if I continue to fail in finding a non-engineering job?
  • I would definitely talk to that company's HR person about the marketing job and convey your interest in applying for that. Hopefully she'll give you a chance to at least interview for it! If you don't get it, ask for feedback on what you need to do to be able to get that type of job. Do you need an MBA? Is there any other type of training that they would've liked to see you have? If you need an MBA for that position, would the company help you to get one?

Also, have you looked into whether your current company offers a similar position? They might be willing to give you a shot as well, and that would give you some marketing experience to put on your resume.
