I am 24, and have not started trying yet. I decided that I have to own a home, have 6 months income saved, have all my bad debts paid off and be driving a newer car (I'm still in my clunker from college!) before I will start trying to have children. I'm interested to hear other's thoughts and what they planned or didn't plan when it came to preparing to have children.
I'm now 32 and have 2 wonderful baby boys; 28 months and 7 months. We got married at 27, and wanted a year "to ourselves" before we started trying. Also I was finishing my doctorate. We decided to wait until I finished, had a full time job and had been at work for 3 months (because I was eligible for FMLA - unpaid - leave only after I had been with the company for 12 months- I didn't count on any job to give paid maternity leave...many places don't offer anything, but I wanted my job protected which FMLA does).
I'm glad we waited until I had a full time job, because shortly after getting my job we bought a house, and then shortly after that my husband lost his job, and then right after that we found out we were pregnant. I believe that if you wait for the stars to align there will never be a "perfect time" but you can't be naive either. if we had tried right as soon as we got married and I was still in school, we would have had a baby when my husband lost his job, and I might not have had one yet.
