What Is Your Morning Schedule?
  • How do you make the most of your mornings with your family? Do you have any time-saving tips?
  • We learned to prepare as much as possibly the night prior. I lay out my outfit and my daughters, pack my lunch, sometimes prepare her breakfast and pack her backpack the night before. It helps cut down on the arguments in the morning and she has time to dilly dally built in. We did get her a timer setting it for certain tasks and it is easier if she can pick what order she completes getting ready.
  • Getting as much done the night before is key in our family. I have an 8 year old step-son and a 14 month old daughter. My step-son shows signs of ADD/ADHD, but has never been tested. We found that creating a morning and evening to-do list for him was the best for us, in terms of letting him have freedom to get his things done in whatever order he wanted, and cutting down on our nagging. He sets his clothes out and preps his backpack the night before. We prepare the majority of his lunch and set out the nonperishable breakfast goodies the night before, too. Our daughter is usually up, fed and back in bed before my step-son is up, which gives me time to get breakfast started, wake him and get him going on his morning list. Also, in our family a timer is a must to try to keep my step-son focused on the task at hand. By the time he's finished breakfast and is brushing his teeth, my daughter is up and dressed and we're ready to head to school.
  • During the week, our teenager is up at 6:00 AM (her choice), my 10 year old and I are up at 7:00, and we are out the door at 7:30.

Like Carlene, we prepare as much as possible each night, so we don't have to get up as early or rush because none of us are morning people. We have our morning routine down to a science and very, very rarely have any problems. Our teenager takes care of herself and I get our 10 year old and me ready letting my husband sleep (1 less kid to deal with *wink*) until it's time to leave to take our teenager to school on my way to work. Then all my husband has to do is make sure our 4th grader has her jacket and backpack before he takes her to school 45 minutes later.

My biggest sanity saver? When my youngest daughter was a toddler, I bought a hanging organizer with a cubby for each day of the week that I put complete outfits in when I folded the laundry on Sunday. Then, she could pick any outfit from one of the cubbies to wear that day (she built independence and I got no argument = win/win). We still use this routine; only she gets to help build outfits for the week. I put a post-it on the day's cubby if she needs to wear a particular outfit for some reason (e.g. field trip, Girl Scouts, picture day, etc). I had no idea this purchase and routine would be such a sanity saver - for us both.
