I owe Federal taxes I can not pay. I've been stricken with cancer twice during the past several years and have not been able to work, and at present am virtually bed bound due to complications from bone cancer, and the subsequent surgeries necessary to try to save my leg. I am contemplating an offer and compromise, but do not have funds to hire an attorney. Has anyone on this discussion panel ever ventured into IRS waters alone?
Yes I contacted the IRS and set up a pretty reasonable to plan to pay back a sizeable amount that I owed. Trust me you can do the same thing that a tax attorney can do for free. Don't be afraid to contact them and explain the situation. Once you are able to show that you are willing to pay off what you owe, they are more willing to work with you and will seem less intimidating. Plus any tax refunds that you are due, are automatically applied so that helps bring the balance down much faster in addition to the monthly payments that you set up with them. Usually they give you 5 years to pay what you owe.
I believe there is a way that they government will forgive debt if you have a "permanent disability", try researching that. I also saw a story about a woman who forgot to pay because she recently had a child, and the IRS forgave her penalty fees. Have you called them? They might be more helpful than you'd think. Hope that you are able to save your leg.
