Ahh story of my life. I'm currently abroad in Spain for the semester and my bank's (Bank of America) fees have been killing me. I have to pull out money a lot in Europe because many places do not take American credit cards / credit cards in general. The atm fees are 3% + $5!! I think I've lost close to $100 just in fees.
But! I already have a savings account with Ally and have decided to open a checking account with them as well. In general, their rates are just so much better than BofA. They only charge 1% to take out money abroad-- life savers!
10 years ago I was laid off from a job. When I told BofA, my bank at the time, that I would no longer have direct deposit paychecks, they told me I would have a monthly fee for my account. I had a checking and savings and had been with them for 6 or 7 years. There was no compassion for the fact that I just lost my job. I closed my accounts the next day and took everything to US Bank who I have been with since.
I've been with Citibank for a long time (over 10 years) and have been pretty happy. No new fees, and I still get points on my debit card and credit card. I heard they are not giving points on new debit card accounts opening up, but my old accounts have been grandfathered in. Pretty happy with it!
I opened a savings and checking account with Bank of America (BoA) when I started college because it was the most convenient back in the area that was also prevalent in my hometown. I've always preferred using my debit card over cash because it's easier for me to keep track of my spending that way with BoA online banking, Mint, and now LearnVest. In the year since I graduated, I opened a savings and checking accounts with Ally, a high-yield savings account with American Express, and recently a savings account with SmartyPig. Those accounts give me more interest than any of BoA accounts and don't charge me crazy fees. Once I have my direct deposit switched over to my Ally checking account, I'll be closing my accounts with BoA.
I have TCF bank and they haven't been too bad with fees... they used to have an online banking fee that they got rid of and made me happy. I recently noticed a "check image" fee and called and he took it off by making my account paperless.
