Saving on Clothing and Accessories
  • How do you build a chic wardrobe and stay on budget? Share your tips for saving on clothing and accessories.
  • I buy all my clothes at the end of the season rather than the beginning. I end up with beautiful clothes at about 75% off! Which means I can either save or buy 4 times the clothes!
  • i buy staples like white, black and gray tees/tanks when they go on sale, and pair them with my nicer pieces like blazers or skirts. i also love to layer, and choose wisely when buying items like belts, jewelry and scarves, making sure they're versatile and can pull together lots of different, simple pieces to make new outfits.
  • I shop Goodwill for most of my clothes. Besides saving money, it ends up being a time-saver - one location to go to, and all the clothes are pre-sorted by size, type, and color. I go every few months and try on a bunch of things and usually find a few to buy that fit well and are in good condition. You can't go in with the idea that you need a particular specific item though because chances are they won't have it, but if you go periodically, over time you can build a great wardrobe very inexpensively.
  • I shop clearance racks first and foremost and only in stores if I have coupons. My new motto since 2011 is never pay full price for clothing and shoes. It's better to look fabulous and have cash in your purse to compliment your outfit.
  • I take my gently used items to consignment shops and keep whatever I profit off those in my account there instead of just cashing it out. This means I am able to shop when my daughters or me need something using my "savings account" at the store. It is great!!
  • I have a clothing swap with friends twice a year. We are a bigger and bigger group every time. We make an afternoon out of it by bringing something to eat and drink, have the clothing on the ground in piles (shirts, skirts, pants, shoes and accessories) and attack the pile! I always get a few basics (blank t-shirts) and sometime scores brand names.
It's lots of fun and It also cleans my closet at the same time!
  • I buy great deal for clothing if I need an item or love an item and then take it to have it tailored.
  • I never pay full-price...when I find something I love, I wait for it to go on sale because most retailers often have % off weekends or what not. I'm not an XS or an XL so I don't do well in clearance sections but I follow all my favorite brands on Facebook/Twitter and usually jump on sales when I know I want something. I also try not to spend more than $10-$20 for tops, sweaters and cardigans and I do pretty well. I buy a lot of plain colored clothing at American Eagle, Forever21, Target and HM...which always has sales. I only spend more on blazers and pants...but I also only pay sale prices for those as well...I love Banana Republic, Gap and JCrew outlets :)
  • I tend to buy classic pieces that goes with my existing wardrobe. It's important that I can wear them for multiple seasons. I look at fashion magazines and websites for celebrity inspired looks. I also love shopping with coupons and sales. I have been keeping myself on a budget .Since January 2012, I spent $93 on my wardrobe and that included: an Albertus Swanepoel for target hat, 2 pairs of jeans from hm & target, one kimono dress from target, 5 blouses from hm, gap, old navy, 2 pairs of ballet flats from payless and 4 bracelets from hm. All purchased on sale and with coupons! I get so many compliments on my purchases. You really can look chic with very little money.
  • My rule of thumb is to only buy the trendiest of clothes in cheap stores. If I'm going to spend a lot on an article of clothing, it needs to be something more traditional that I can wear for years.
  • I'm obsessed with the designer consigner stores. When I travel to different cities I bring an empty suitcases to bring back a ton of clothes. Some cities have cuter things for less money than my city! Also I try to be realistic about my own wardrobe and will part with items that I know will resell easily if I won't be able to get enough use out of them!
