I have one: We have a high deductible health insurance plan, but I've been putting money each month in an HSA (health savings account). So when my husband was hospitalized unexpectedly, I was happy to have that cushion. After the adjustments that my insurance company negotiated, we were sent the bill from the hospital in the mail.

After prepping myself to pay the full amount billed, I went to the hospital billing website provided on the invoice and noticed in small letters a note saying that if you pay in full and mention that you may be eligible for a discount, they'll give you one - but only if you pay over the phone and ask about the discount. They gave me 10% off the amount invoiced! Score!

Also, I found out working with my HSA was really easy. Just hold on to the invoice from the hospital or doctor's office, and then request a qualified distribution from your HSA. The money will land in your designated checking account, and then you can use it to pay the invoice. Easy!

The HSA maximum per family is $6,250 for 2012. I'm so glad we had medical savings - in addition to all of the great stuff LV talks about like retirement, etc. Here's to health, wealth and happiness.]]>

Renting http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/149/renting Mon, 05 Mar 2012 12:26:55 -0500 larryspub 149@/discussions/discussions ING Bought Out By Capital One http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/143/ing-bought-out-by-capital-one Fri, 24 Feb 2012 11:17:39 -0500 Mary Joan Cunningham 143@/discussions/discussions I got an email from ING (text below), but I'm curious to know more, if info is available, as to how this might change the previously beneficial interest rates that ING was known for.
From my financial planning session with a LearnVest financial planner, I remember that ING *used* to be a recommended savings plan. Is it still?

"On February 17, 2012, our parent company - ING Group - announced that ING DIRECT USA was officially purchased by Capital One. We are proud to bring these two great companies together.
What's it mean for you today? It's business as usual. You'll still be able to access your account online, view balances, pay bills - everything that you were able to do yesterday. And rest assured, your money's still safe and FDIC-insured.
What else can you expect?
For starters, coming this spring, you'll have access to CheckMate, our new remote deposit service. You can deposit checks directly into your ING DIRECT accounts anywhere from your computer or the ING DIRECT mobile app.
If you use Electric Orange checking or MONEY, you'll be able to withdraw cash at any of Capital One's over 2,000 fee-free ATMs - that's in addition to the 35,000 free Allpoint ATMs you can currently access.
What's it mean for you down the road? As part of the Capital One team, we remain committed to offering innovative products and maintaining the same Customer service and experience you've come to expect while saving you time and money.
As always, thanks for being part of America's favorite place to save."]]>

As of December 31, 2010, ELNY had $905,945,201 in admitted assets, and $2,474,317,343 in liabilities, for a deficit of $1,568,372,142. This affects thousands of people and families. More info can be found at: www.ELNY.org.
My husband, who was almost killed by a drunk driver in a car accident as a child, had a court settlement there that paid out small amounts over time (it was nothing huge, but enough to help us pay the mortgage and plan for retirement). I had thought insurance companies and court settlements were safe, but just learned that nothing is safe from this economy as we received a letter today stating that as a result of the liquidation only a portion of the money we were owed would actually be paid. I understand about taking risks in stocks, but this I thought was secure. What can one do in this type of situation as I'm sure it's not the only insurance company to go under? I read that it affects those with life insurance too. So, if a family buys life insurance so that their family is covered in case of the loss of a parent and then the economy goes bad, that family may lose the protection they thought they had secured and now a family without a parent is also at a loss for funds they thought were secure. For my situation it just messes up our ability to pay our mortgage and retire, but it's still a devastating loss.
Can people in this situation take legal action to fight to get the payments they are entitled to? Are there ways to protect oneself when buying insurance or when settling a court case to prevent something like this from happening? I'm trying to figure out what I can learn form this and to share this experience so others can learn and do not experience this painful hit due to the economy.]]>
