I came out of school a few years ago with only about $45k in student loan debt, which I've since paid down to close to $32k.

I've decided for personal reasons that I want to go back to become a foreign language teacher. The area I went to school for and subsequently am working in now just is not fulfilling work, nor is it making me happy. I kind-of got steamrolled through college without really thinking about what I WANTED, rather, just about what would be the most job security.

So, luckily, I found a school that has a program that is solely a graduate program created for people like me, who want to go back and teach in a subject that was not what they have their bachelors degree in. I know everyone complains about student loan debt, and to each his own, but for me, I'd rather take on the additional 30-50k for graduate school and be happy then spend the 30-50k to go back to graduate school for the field I'm in.

I'll be working the job Im at currently throughout the whole process up until the time I have to student teach, at which point I will be trying to look for programs with debt forgiveness (ie - teach america, something like that), to help with the costs - but do any of you have any advice on how I can minimize any additional student loan debt (aside from paying as I go), or know of any places that have a comprehensive list of where scholarships are offered?]]>
Income Based Student Loan Repayment / Loan forgiveness http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/266/income-based-student-loan-repayment-loan-forgiveness Mon, 05 Nov 2012 09:32:02 -0500 Bsmurphy 266@/discussions/discussions
I'd really like to go back to school, but I don't want to go any further into debt to do it. I've been thinking about it, and I'm thinking that since income based repayment caps my payments depending on my income, that it doesn't really matter how much more I take out in loans, that I'll only have to pay back the percentage for 120 payments.

Sooo..... if I go back to school and take out $6,000 more in Stafford loans, then start back on IBR when I graduate, I won't have to pay back any more than I would have originally.

Does that make sense to anyone else?? ]]>

I have priority goals for a few different accounts, such as credit cards and a student loan account.

The issue that I'm having is that the student loan is broken up into an "A" and "B" account. I have tried linking both a and b to a priority goal, as I automatically have $106.91 deducted to go towards this student loan on or around the 11th of each month. The issue I am having is that when trying the a or b account linked to a priority goal to pay down $106.91 every month, it does not record the payment, but does show the amount is deducted from my account when I view the activity on Learnvest under the "Inbox" section. I categorize it to loan payments, but it still does not credit towards the loan paydown priority goal.

Any suggestions on this?]]>

I recently received a sum of money from my parents to assist me during a transition of selling my home and owing some money on the sale and shortly after this moving into a new place. Currently since it is a credit to my bank account, this is categorized on Learnvest in the "Income" category. I created a separate folder under Income, and called it "Mom and Dad - Loan" but this is going to skew my monthly income average, since I am a salary plus commissioned employee.

Do you have any suggestions on how to better categorize this short-term bridge loan that I will be paying back to my parents in full over the next month or two?]]>

I'm in a position where my student loans are just too much to handle financially along with rent, groceries and living. Professionally, I am able to take classes for free and decided to take classes and temporarily defer my loans to get a head a bit. Does anyone have any advice on what to do during this time... I'm thinking I should focus on paying off my credit card and save money that would have went to my student loan payments?]]>

I have gone through the traditional route of contacting the departments listed to dispute these items but it seems like as soon as they are removed/resolved they magically pop up again. It is dragging my score down and I am losing patience with the "system". I'm debating sending in a check and asking it be applied to the principal only. Or should I send in two separate checks - $50 towards the interest and $200 towards the principal?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions and/or advice!

So now...here we go again on the debt. We're still working on the credit cards, as well as the business debt, while trying to keep from going broke or insane. And we'd like to start a family soon. Somehow, our plan went kaput!

So we made a new plan. My husband and I are both working full-time and part-time jobs, and I make custom cakes on the side as well. I coupon like a madwoman - with only a small stockpile of things that we ACTUALLY USE (mainly personal care products and canned food like tomatoes for soups, etc). I am on a number of survey panels that provide me with points that I accumulate to redeem towards gift cards (We've used these for wedding and birthday gifts mainly.), as well as products to test. Just in the last week, I've received a full-size shampoo and conditioner and a full-size laundry detergent! So I get both the products and the points from filling out a survey about them after a few weeks. This past summer we had a large family garden, which is providing us (as well as my parents, brother, and his 2 kids) with green beans and corn, as well as a few pickles and onions for the winter.

In the coming months, I'm planning to reduce my grocery spending (with coupons) by another $20/month. We're planning an even bigger garden next year with more variety, and we're also planning on getting a couple of feeder hogs for the farm, which will provide my extended family with plenty of pork for the year.

If anyone has any other suggestions or things that are working for them to help save and cut costs, I'd love to hear them!

Buying a new car and condo! Help! http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/167/buying-a-new-car-and-condo-help Tue, 10 Apr 2012 12:17:15 -0400 aweb 167@/discussions/discussions
On my 25th birthday, I will be receiving an investment account with about $70k, which was a result of a medical malpractice lawsuit when I was 1 year old. I desperately need a new car, as mine has 180,000 miles and has been costing me so much in repairs. I also am considering buying a 1-bedroom condo, to make the investment and stop throwing my money away on rent each month. This has been in my short term planning for some time, and I will have around $5k saved to help with the down payment on the condo (my price range is around $130k-$180k).

I am very overwhelmed with how I should allocate this large sum of money coming to me in a few weeks. Should I keep all of it in long-term investments and finance both the car and the condo? Should I buy the car with cash and make a large down payment on the condo to minimize mortgage payments? Should I pay off my student loans in full?
