I live in Atlanta and the job choices are quick slim. I have a BFA in Photography but have worked multiple different types of jobs, which have given me a wide variety of skills and experience. Unfortunately, I'm working 2 part time jobs and am having a really hard time making ends meet. I'm willing to relocate for a full-time job in another state, but am unsure how to approach this.

In hindsight, there might have been a problem with that Accounting Clerk position when that financial department didn't have too many tasks for me to complete. I either had to walk back and forth from my desk and ask for a task every 5-10 minutes, or I asked other people in a different department if there was anything I could do for them. Overall, I was more like an Office Assistant, but I still held on to the premise that I would be trained for something more in my immediate career.

On Monday of this week, I finally got the opportunity to prove my worth when my HR representative presented me with a training schedule to learn the auditing and accounting functions for their different franchises in California. Everything was great until I got back from my break yesterday afternoon, when my HR representative sat me down and told me that I because their needs have changed and I didn't fit the professional capacity in my department, my position was being terminated immediately. On the surface in those few minutes, I smiled, thanked them for the opportunity and took my last paycheck. After I was well distanced from the office, naturally I cried and I felt angry and hurt (which I still am).

The company never gave me a chance to prove my worth for the company, never gave me any real responsibilities to begin with, and their decision was a big slap to my face; now I have no job and I have to start over again my job search (which is going to be as long and tedious as last time, only worse because I have no income anymore).

I don't know what to do because everything is still so fresh, and I don't know if this fiasco will affect my job search. I am wondering if anyone else has been in my situation and how the situation was handled in a tough time like this.]]>
Company is getting aquired... Looking for advice http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/242/company-is-getting-aquired...-looking-for-advice Wed, 05 Sep 2012 21:28:46 -0400 alsoa23 242@/discussions/discussions Here's the situation: my boyfriend's department of his company was just sold to another company. The CEO from the new company said they will most likely retain the majority of jobs that spend more than 80% of their day directly on retirement projects, which is what he does. He is fairly optimistic he won't get laid off. However, he has been working exceptionally hard since he started this position (been with original company for 5yrs, at current position for 1.5yrs) and is now one of the more valuable employees on his team, despite being there the shortest time. At this point in a position, normally one would have hoped to be up for a promotion/raise with the extra work he has put in. However, now that he will no longer be working for the current company, he could be offered less than what he is currently making.

What I am wondering, assuming the best, that the new company gives him an offer, is that new offer negotiable? Especially if he can back himself up with examples/ salary.com info? I can't find any information on if this is an acceptable thing to do.

Since I am trying to better myself fiscally, I am trying to help him get there too (thanks to LV, I finally have a 3 mo savings!) and want to help him achieve financial success. So I just wonder if I should try to encourage him to negotiate since his original company kept citing "the economy" for not giving him any kind of substantial raise after the bailouts (he started this job in 07).

Thanks for any help!! ]]>

I have now been an electrical engineer for 3 years and I hate my career. I have applied for several marketing, PR, event planning, and various business-related jobs, and have only landed one interview last fall, where I got to the final round of interviews and was rejected. I believe that people see my engineering experience on my fancy photoshopped resume and immediately write me off.

I recently found my dream position: a marketing manager position for an engineering company, in the industry where I have 3 years of experience. The position actually REQUIRES an engineering degree! I was ecstatic when I received a call back from the company… only to find out they were interested in interviewing me for an engineering position.

Do I take the interview and try to show off my marketing experience and skills? Do I try to talk the HR woman into giving me a shot for the marketing manager position? Do I go for the engineering position anyway in hopes of transferring to the marketing department later? Help!

Follow-up question: should I consider going back to school for an MBA if I continue to fail in finding a non-engineering job?]]>
What do I do when I hate my job? http://www.learnvest.com/discussions/discussion/193/what-do-i-do-when-i-hate-my-job Wed, 16 May 2012 18:36:59 -0400 orozcom 193@/discussions/discussions
Today, I came to the conclusion that going back to school for my MBA will be my best solution; not only will I have the chance to use my current and past studies to gain my financial/accounting certifications; I would also have the privilege to take advantage of internship opportunities I would not have qualified for otherwise. Nevertheless, I find it unfair that I can't advance in my career because employers would not really want to take a chance with an entry-level graduate like myself.

All in all, I guess my questions would be what can I do to stand out among other job applicants while I look for other jobs in another company/industry I am genuinely interested in? And what can I do in the meantime to make my current job a little more bearable? ]]>

I'm nearing the end of my college career, and while I have a bevy of "professional" pieces in my closet (way too many collared shirts, a few two piece suits and suitable shoes), I am completely lost at how to pull together an interview outfit that makes me stand out in a good way.

I am entering a field where it is important for me to look credible and pulled-together, but stylish and creative at the same time. A collared shirt just doesn't scream " I can think outside of the box!"

I'm looking for resources covering fashionable and affordable professional attire for women. Any suggestions?]]>

I am at the point where no company wants to hire a woman who is partially disabled because of all the risks involved. Also, because of my past... an extremely violent husband who almost killed me because he beat me so badly, I had to legally change my name, and my kids names, move to a different state and start all over!

Because of all these ups and down I need to start over once again but, this time I'm completely broke! I would appreciate any advice you could give! thank you!]]>
