Day 9 What Money Can’t Buy

QUIZ YOURSELF

As you saw yesterday in the beauty section, style is more than just clothing: It’s also about certain intangibles. And those intangibles aren’t as obvious as clothing, skin, hair or makeup.

Part of it is how well a person takes care of herself. While you may not know whether someone is eating right, sleeping well or exercising, you often can get a sense just by looking at her. A woman who’s taking care of herself radiates health and strength and moves confidently. She might be wearing jeans and a t-shirt, but you can practically imagine her at a ball—and of course, she’d be the belle. On the other hand, the same woman dressed in the finest couture wouldn’t draw half the attention if her eyes were lifeless from too little sleep, her cheekbones gaunt from poor diet and her brow furrowed from stress.

So, if for no other reason, do it for style. Take care of yourself. Like sticking to a budget and taking good care of your skin, that will require some effort every day. But it’s worth it. Take our quiz to find out how well you are taking care of yourself, and to learn how to use diet and fitness to improve your style.

As you can see, keeping oneself healthy is an extremely important aspect of style. But, there’s one more intangible that we haven’t covered. What gives a woman style is some combination of the visuals—clothing, hair, accessories, diet, fitness—and those things that you can’t quite put your finger on: confidence, poise, composure … whatever it might be. Every woman’s elusive style imprint will come from what we call priceless style trademarks, which we often admire in our greatest style icons.
