Winter is the best time of year to save money in the kitchen because most available ingredients—tough cuts of meat, starchy potatoes and other pantry vegetables—are not only cheap, but they also take well to slow cooking, which requires very few ingredients and very little effort.
The best part: If you own a slow cooker, you don’t even have to be at home when you cook!
I’ve put together some of my favorite slow-cooked meals, plus wintery drinks to keep you extra cozy while you wait.
(Note: If you don’t own a slow cooker, the same results can be easily attained over a very low flame on the stove or in the oven, depending on the recipe.)
Either way, these hibernation-style recipes will help you spend less time slicing and dicing, and more time curled up on the sofa where you belong.
- Tomato-Basil Soup
- Beer Beef Stew
- French Onion & Fennel Soup
- Chicken Cassoulet
- Five Spice Winter Squash Soup
