Former Marie Claire editor in chief—and newly named Cosmo editor in chief—Joanna Coles is no stranger to making bold career moves.

From moving to the United States from her native England to work for The Guardian to making the jump from newspapers to magazines, Joanna has taken surprising risks that have clearly paid off in the long run.

On October 9, Joanna, along with Top Chef’s Gail Simmons and fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, among others, took the stage at LearnVest LIVE, LearnVest’s first-ever live event in partnership with Chase Blueprint.

To a packed crowd, Joanna shared her top career tips for nabbing that corner office and achieving the career you’ve always dreamed of. Since the audience went crazy for her, tweeting her quotes and raving about her leather pants, we wanted to let all LearnVest readers in on some of her secrets for taking career risks to get ahead.

Learn how jumping in a speeding car led her to her dream gig—and the five rules of job-hopping everyone needs to know to get ahead.

Would love to read this article but can’t view videos from work. Any way we can get a text version?

Hi  @cceb29296ffd53b24a722c9ec3ff1088:disqus I’m glad you want to watch it! I totally understand your frustration if you can’t access Youtube on your work computer. If you have an iPhone and download the new (free!) LearnVest iPhone app, you’ll be able to view the video there. I hope that helps!

Me too…and I don’t have an iPhone and would prefer to read an article than watch a video anyway.

The speaker is bold.  She is definitely one who takes initiatives and takes charge of her life/career.  It is so true that one has to step out of her comfort zone, but I feel that sometimes we need to keep some basic etiquette.  While I admire her drive and confidence, but she should always care for others.  I was a bit shocked by her pulling the passenger out from the cab in order to get to the future boss.  Is it too dramatic?

If we pan out a little bit, to see the larger picture, I think it’s possible her pulling the passenger out may have been necessary. Sometimes women need to honor their ambition above being nice and keeping to etiquette and caring for others. Was it rude and annoying to the passenger? Very likely. Do we sometimes (unintentionally) hurt others’ feelings to honor our own needs? Yes.

I think she may have been exaggerating to make a point of how desperate she was to catch this woman before she left for France.

Love it!! But, I would really like to watch her entire speech, is there any way to do this?

Love this video.  I attended Learnvest’s October 9th event and was wondering- it seemed to mention that evening that all of the sessions were taped and would be shared with attendees- is there any timeline of when this will be happening?

This maybe the best career advice I’ve ever heard. And though it would have been great to see Joanna speak in person, getting to experience her delivering the message via YouTube is pretty darn awesome!

    Thanks, LearnVest!

I LOVED this interview!  Thanks for sharing!
