A new day, a new year.
And when you're a mom, time seems to move even faster. One moment you're holding a warm little body; the next, they're morphing into mini adults.
Which is why, after embracing all the holiday warm fuzzies, you need to take a moment and take care of a few key New Year to-dos. Every item on this list is about building a better life for your family.
And while we’re sure you’ve made your fair share of New Year’s resolutions already, now we're here to help you achieve them ... so get ready for a knock-out 2012 by knocking these to-dos off your list this month:
Rework Your Family Budget for 2012. Deadline: Tuesday, January 3
A new year calls for a new, revamped budget. As a mom, you’ll want to reassess your family budget on a regular basis, since growing kids mean ever-changing needs. Start by looking at your spending patterns from 2011 (the easiest way to do that is to link your accounts and log in to the My Money Center). You'll be able to see the different categories of your spending, like groceries and transportation. How does your spending in those areas compare to what you thought you were spending?
If you find that you’re spending more than your total income, something has to change. Cut Your Costs Bootcamp is a good place to start.
Get in Touch With Your Time. Deadline: Tuesday, January 10
Being a mom means balancing the needs of your kids with your own passions and personal goals. Last year, we gave you 13 signs you’re too busy. This year, we want to help you maximize the time that's most fulfilling to you. For the next month, keep track of the best and worst time you spend every day. At the end of the month, review these moments to find patterns. Are you consistently unhappy when you spend more than an hour at a time doing the same task? Maybe you'll choose to break up your tasks into smaller bits from now on.
Start a Family Health Competition. Deadline: Tuesday, January 17
Lots of people’s New Year’s resolutions are about getting healthy. Good health is key to making sure you and your entire family are living a rich, fulfilled life. Get everyone on board by choosing one goal each month for the whole year, like exercising more, getting more sleep or eating more vegetables--together, the family can choose the goal each month. Give rewards (stickers, goodies, etc.) for creative ways to achieve--and maintain--those health goals.
Have a Resolution Pow-Wow. Deadline: Saturday, January 21
Studies have shown that it takes 21 days to form a solid habit. On the 21st of this month, assess how you've done so far: Are you on track to keep your resolutions? If your kids are old enough, have them talk about their progress on their resolutions, too. If your stick-to-it-ive-ness has been a bit spotty, it's time to find out why. Take a half hour to dive into your hidden money beliefs, and to monitor what you're unintentionally conveying to your kids. Take our quiz to find your hidden money beliefs, and, if your kids are older (think junior high or above), consider having them take the quiz, too.
Contemplate what your money beliefs say about you, and how you can consciously change any unhealthy habits. By the same token, notice if your child's money beliefs are the same as yours, and consider what you're subconsciously teaching your child about money, whether you mean to or not.
Get Your Taxes in Order. Deadline: Tuesday, January 31
Keep an eye on your mailbox throughout January, so you don't miss any tax forms as they roll in. In particular, look out for your W-2 and 1099 forms. These are the forms that report your wages, salary, tips, commissions, federal tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare taxes, and more. As you get them in the mail, save them in a safe and secure place, whether you put them in a manila folder in your desk or scan them to your hard drive so you have a digital copy. If you haven't received these forms by the first week of February, call your employer(s) to inquire.
