LV Hits the Streets: Independent Women

Independent WomenWarm summer weather and a three-day weekend are reasons enough to celebrate, so it’s easy to lose sight of the original reason we honor the Fourth of July.

So, LearnVest took to the streets in preparation for Independence Day to ask women, “What does financial independence mean to you?”

Your answers, funny and profound, paid homage to the process of getting older, working for the first time, starting a family and taking charge of your personal finances in order to be truly independent.

And why is financial independence important? The resounding answer from our interviewees: “So I can do what I want!”

The world has changed with women in the workplace and in all aspects of careers and dynamics. Financial independence to me as a woman, means not only do I have the means to contribute in terms of earnings and independence, but exemplifying to my child about being equally important in decision making and support of the family unit.Decisions that my father and grandfather made in the previous generations are now in the domain of women too. Besides women today make very large spending decisions!
Making choices (short and long-term), thinking about the future, investing and being able to save more for double earning couples are huge strides we have only seen in the past 25 years. And that is just fabulous!
    Happy Fourth to everyone!

Fourth of July and your personal “Financial Independence,”…Really?  I think the article’s focus here over a major US holiday (that cost our forefathers dearly!) has become very individualistic and self-centered.  After all, we aren’t only celebrating the opportunity for a woman’s personal financial freedom and lifestyle in this country.  We are celebrating all freedoms for all Americans (financial, religious, speech, equality, opportunity), and we are celebrating HOW we got here.

With every firecracker and backyard July 4th BBQ, we are reminded that this freedom did (and still does not) come without tremendous sacrifice.  This is a collective celebration for all Americans – is not just about me and my personal financial victories as a woman.  It is a fact that my business ownership and financial independence would never have been possible without the blood and sacrifice of our American forefathers, ancestors, and present day heroes who have allowed me the opportunity to pursue my dreams.  For at least one day – for July 4, please lets take the focus off our ourselves – and back on the country and what it stands for.

As John Adam’s said in a letter to his wife: “I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration and support these States.  Yet through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing Light and Glory.  I can see that end is worth all the Means.  And that posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho we should rue it, which I trust in God we shall not.”

  • Ex-career woman

I used to be financially independent, but then I got married and had to move to a country where I don’t have a work permit.  I knew this was coming. However I had no clue what it felt like to be financially dependent on someone.I’m hoping someday I get to do more than take care of a household.
