From Cashmere to Cookware: What to Buy Now

We'll occasionally grab a magazine or a pack of gum at the register. But when it comes to large purchases, it helps to plan ahead. Like, months ahead.

Back in January, snow boots were the hot sale item, but now that we can finally bid adieu to snow storms, we're turning our attention to a new array of seasonal items.

One of the best ways to get discounts is to shop when stores are trying to clear their inventory. For furniture, that means you can shop right before the season starts (when retailers make space for the new versions that come in).

Clothing is a bit less convenient, since stores start selling each new season so early. Sure, you might not be in the mood to wear your freshly-bought cashmere in the spring and summer, but you’ll have it ready to go as soon as the weather starts to cool again next season.

So, with that in mind, here are the best deals for May:

What To BuyWhat To Know
Sweaters & CashmerePrices can be reduced by as much as 25% to 40%
Vacuum CleanersNew models come out in June, so retailers are trying to make room
CookwarePromotions for graduation and weddings mean you should buy pots and pans now
RefrigeratorsNew fridges come out over the summer so stores are clearing space; you can negotiate for fridges
Patio FurnitureWarmer weather means newer models, so buy last season’s versions now
Grilling SuppliesItems like charcoal and lighter fluid tend to be a good deal
TiresFor whatever reason, we’ve heard that tires tend to go on sale in May
New CarNot the very best month to buy a new car, but historically there are pretty good discounts on cars in May
Party SuppliesWhether or not you’re throwing a graduation party, now’s a good time to stock up on disposable plates, cups, etc.
