The Find My iPhone app is now free from the Apple store. Absent-minded, rejoice.

Recovery Gets Cheaper

For those still lacking in shiny Apple gadgets, Find My iPhone is an app that locates your lost phone or iPad. Obviously, it isn’t meant to be installed on the lost device—instead, it’s meant to installed on all of your iGadgets (you don’t have a collection by now?), and ideally on your friends’ as well. This way, the app can be used to locate the lost device from anyone’s touch screen. The missing device can then be locked or wiped, and the panicked owner can breathe easy.

Apple Favors The Latest Customers

Here’s a caveat, though, as pointed out by Engadget:

Find My iPhone is free for all devices running iOS 4.2.1, but you can only register for the service from an iPhone 4, iPad, or new iPod touch, unless you pay for MobileMe.

But of course, LifeHacker has a way around the technological restrictions. For instructions on enabling and using the Find My iPhone app on pre-2010 devices, check out their instructions.

Tell us in the comments: Have you ever lost a phone? Did you ever see it again?

Last time I lost my phone I had a meltdown. Not just because it had confidential info (it didn’t, really), but because it’s my security blanket! I never go out without my phone.
