Places To Go For 4th Of July Weekend Getaways: Follow The Fireworks!

This 4th of July, we help you chase the best free public events (read: fireworks) in your area. If you’re like us, you’re itching to get out of town, but don’t want to miss out on the explosive festivities. Plus, you should never pay for fun Independence Day activities, since so many cities have amazing festivals for free. Instead of flying around the country—which is expensive and overcrowded—we’re taking short road trips in our own neck of the woods. Click for a slide show of our favorite happenings in each region of the country:

Well this makes me want to skip out on my family bbq. I really love the Houston event: fun + giving back = fourth of july success!

I know that at least in my corner of the suburbs, a few small towns do their own firework displays that are always free and usually in a great community atmosphere. Also with the bonus of being walkable in many cases =)

@ LenoreK: We agree that local displays can be fantastic as well! And if you're lucky enough to live that close, walking is a great idea — it's transportation, exercise, and thriftiness in one.

Anyone have any good suggestions for fun things to do in NYC on the 4th?
