We’d love to vacation for weeks at a time, but—as much as we deny it to our friends and significant others—it really is hard to take off time from work. Plus, elaborate and extended vacations cost more money than we have or care to spend. Sure, we want to backpack around Greece for two full weeks, but we might put it off ‘til next year. There are riots right now, anyway.
Instead, we’re planning to use a couple vacation days on random Mondays or Fridays in order to take a long weekend or two during the summer. We’ll tell you our top must-do in each place, where to stay, and how to get there. For more ideas, check out Nextstop, which has handmade sightseeing itineraries from locals and co-travelers.
We’ve created a slide show of the 3 best places to go for a long weekend in each region of the country: the Northeast, the South, the Midwest, West Coast, Northwest, and Southwest. For each location, we’ve found a great, inexpensive place to stay, calculated travel expenses from major cities in the region, and listed the number-one thing you must do if you go.
Read on for a slide show of the 18 best long-weekend trips.
