No matter what other scandals these folks have been embroiled in, this is the one list where we give them a pass.

    This list is not even the tip of the iceberg of celebrity generosity, which exceeded hundreds of millions (probably billions from stars such as Bob Hope, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Robert Redford, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, Cheryl Crow, Jewel, Pavarotti, Bono, Sinead O'Connor, Willie Nelson, many of the European pop singers, and so many more. Hollywood and Broadway have more than “paid it forward.”

    Theatrical and musical celebrities get a bad rap from the media, but these 'self indulgent' stars have contributed a lot more to their fellow human beings than all the Wall Street banks and bankers put together.

    No disrespect to contributors to good and important causes — but the highlighted contributors all wealthy!! The scriptural celebrity regarding giving to humanity causes is a poor woman that gave her last two coins to the kingdom movement! Food for thought!

    These are the BIGGEST givers? I'm surprised by how proportionately little some (not all) have given (and the “pledges” don't really count). Seems like there is far greater charitabe giving in the business community.

    I understand that this list and the information it contains is necessarily incomplete.

    have to agree with optimistic pessimist….many on this list is an absolute joke. Court documents regarding Britiney Spears conservatorship showed she had donated $600 the year previous to the filing. To say her “Tour” gave 100k…BFD! The fact she gives clothing for auction or signs something..again BFD. To mention her in this column is an insult to Winfrey, The Newman Foundation, Spielburg, etal.

    No, Michael Jackson held the record for “Celebrity who supported most charity organizations” and he also gave the most to charities and saved hundreds of children’s lives. He was one of the kindest people, and was a great Humanitarian, even though this side of him wasn’t shown publically. Media prefered to create untrue and mean stories about him just to make more money instead of publishing his humanitarian efforts, because bad news sells and good news doesn’t.
